‘The Hollow Needle’ was Maurice Leblanc’s first novel. Lupin finds himself playing a game of cat and mouse with young, amateur detective Isidore Beautrelet. His nemesis, Detective Ganimard and the famous English detective Sherlock Holmes also make appearances. Lupin is chasing the most valuable object he has ever had the opportunity to steal: the Hollow Needle, which hides unfathomable treasure and a secret that the kings of France have been handing down since the time of Julius Caesar. Lupin’s adventures are sheer, unadulterated, entertainment.

This is a collection of short stories by French novelist Maurice Leblanc – and the inspiration for countless retellings, interpretations, and adaptations in film, television, comic books, games, and more – Lupin depicts the elaborate capers and adventures of a suave thief and master of disguise as he steals from the rich and powerful.

When Eliot died in 1965 he had no idea what had happened to this notebook, but it had in fact been sold to the Berg Collection in the New York Public Library in 1958. But no announcement was made until 1968. The contents of this extraordinary manuscript have never before been published in facsimile, and as Robert McCrum says in his foreword, the notebook is ‘a treasure of double rarity: a document charting the turning-point in 20th century literature, but also a window onto a lyrical catharsis that its author wished to remain mysterious.’
